NYC TLC License Renewal Readiness

For a New York City taxi or for-hire driver, a license renewal deadline deserves the same kind of planning as a busy workweek. Setting aside time early to check your status, arrange required education, and keep your information organized can make the process more manageable.
The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) says TLC driver license renewals are completed online, and drivers can renew up to 90 days before their license expires. The TLC also says all renewal requirements must be completed before the license expiration date. Your own TLC account and renewal notices are the best place to confirm what applies to you and the deadlines that apply to your license.
Start by finding your exact date
When your renewal window approaches, log in to the TLC’s online services and confirm the expiration date, contact information, and renewal status connected to your license. Put the date on your calendar and give yourself room to complete each required step before the deadline.
A simple way to organize the process is to keep one folder—digital or paper—for the notices, confirmations, course records, and other documents related to your renewal. That makes it easier to check what is finished and what still needs attention.
Plan your renewal course early
The TLC states that current TLC-licensed drivers take the TLC Driver License Renewal Course every three years as part of renewal. The course must be completed during the 90 days before a driver’s license expires; it cannot be taken before that window. The TLC also advises drivers to register no later than five days before the license-expiration deadline.
The renewal course includes three hours of classroom instruction and one hour of hands-on training. Among other professional topics, it includes practice securing a passenger who uses a wheelchair in an accessible vehicle. Review the TLC’s current list of authorized education providers before registering, and contact a provider directly about available sessions, language options, and its course fee.
Check other requirements in your own renewal record
The TLC renewal page describes requirements that can vary with a driver’s circumstances, such as record submissions or courses. Rather than relying on an old checklist or another driver’s experience, use your own TLC renewal record to identify the items that apply to you.
For example, the TLC says a New York State DMV-certified Defensive Driving Course certificate must be no more than three years old at the time of TLC license renewal. The TLC explains that this is separate from the TLC Driver License Renewal Course. A driver who holds an out-of-state license may also have different documentation to provide. Confirm current instructions and upload documents through the TLC’s designated online service when required.
Use a short final review
1. Confirm the renewal application reflects your current contact information.
2. Check that required course or document records have been completed and submitted where the TLC directs.
3. Save confirmation pages, receipts, and course certificates in your renewal folder.
4. Check the online status again after submitting so you can see whether the TLC needs anything further from you.
This is not a substitute for TLC guidance. Requirements and processing steps can change, and the TLC’s records control for each driver.
